How To Find The Right Therapist In Houston, TX

Houston frequently ranks as a great place to live due to the lower cost of living compared to other cities. Houstonians will often state how one of their favorite things about living in this big city is the diversity of so many different cultures, you can find food from all areas of the world, a great medical center, and friendly people.

Just because there are so many great things about Houston, doesn’t mean it can’t get stressful sometimes, and that means you might need some support. If you’re looking for a therapist, counselor, or psychologist, I’d like to help you find someone who can help.

Do I need a therapist, counselor, or psychologist?

With so many options out there, where do you start?  You may ask yourself, do I need to see a counselor, a psychologist, or a therapist. What is the difference?

Therapists, counselors, and psychotherapists are usually interchangeable terms; these can be licensed professional counselors or social workers who work in the field of mental health and require licenses to practice. Many have master's degrees in counseling psychology or social work and often utilize some form of talk therapy, psycho-education, and teach coping skills to help manage certain life circumstances.  Psychologists also have additional education, such as a doctorate, and can perform specific psychological testing.

How To Find a Therapist In Houston

Here are a few starting points:

  • Asking friends or family for referrals

  • If you see your doctor regularly, ask if they work directly with any therapists they could refer you to

  • Check out therapist or psychology directories

  • look into your local mental health organizations

  • Check with your school or places of worship

  • Also, many counselors offer free consultations to help answer your questions, so don’t be afraid to ask!

The important thing is to find someone you feel comfortable with; someone who can help guide you through your challenges with compassion and expertise.

How A Free Therapy Consultation Can Help

Finding a therapist isn’t just about credentials; it’s also about connection.

A brief phone call can help you in these ways:

  • Help you share what you are struggling with

  • Ask about the therapist’s style and approach

  • Get a feel for whether this would be someone you would be comfortable opening up to.
